With an estimated population of 69,000 people, New Plymouth is the most populous city in the Taranaki region. This region is located on the west coast of New Zealand’s North Island. In more than one count, it has been called the best place to live and raise a family.

New Plymouth is actually named after Plymouth, a town in England. English settlers then named their settlements after actual places in England. Later in 1852, it was turned into a provincial settlement. By 1863, it was declared a borough. More than a century later, it was proclaimed New Plymouth District Council.

The tourist attractions in the city vary; there are gardens, museums, historic buildings, and natural parks. Also notable are the many festivals celebrated by its locals. These festivals include the TSB Bank Festival of Lights, the G-Taranaki International Guitar Festival, the Taranaki Arts Festival, and the Taranaki Rhododendron and Garden Festival. There are also many international sports events held in New Plymouth, such as the ITU World Cup Triathlon and International rugby games.

Many museums in New Plymouth are visited because of their interactivity and vividness. One of these is the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery. Another is the Pure Ariki, popular because of its use of interactive media.

As for swimming activities, the beaches and pools in the city are plenty. In Taranaki, aquatic activities like surfing and kite surfing are possible. The Todd Energy Aquatic Centre is another swimming place with outdoor and indoor pools, as well as slides.

Pleasurable walks can be taken in the Pukekura Park, known as the Garden of National Significance. There are also many golf courses within the city.
