A look at Rewa

Covering a land area of 272 sq. km the province of Rewa is the smallest of all the provinces in Fiji. However, its size is often overlooked considering that the province covers the city of Suva, the capital of the country and the center of commerce, tourism and development in all of Fiji. It shares a border with the province of Naitasiri.

As a consequence of its being the host to the capital city, Rewa is also one of the most populous provinces in Fiji. As of the 2007 census, its population is at 100,787. It is also considered a powerful and influential province, both in politics as well as in tradition. Aside from hosting the national capital, it is also said to be the core of the Buresbasaga Confederacy. This is one of the traditional chiefly hierarchies that govern the country. The Paramount Chief of Rewa, the Roko Tui Dreketi, is also the head of the confederacy.

Suva in Rewa is a major political and commercial center in the country. There are car hire agencies available in the city but taxies are just as affordable. For those who want to go sightseeing around the capital, they can head off to the Suva Municipal Market where they can find a wide range of fresh produce. The Municipal Handicraft Center to the left side of the market is a great place to score bargains on fine Fijian wood carvings, handicraft souvenirs and straw products. The best way to get a bargain is to haggle with the shop owners. A lot of them will be more than amenable to give their wares at discounted rates. Indian cuisine is predominant in the city so travellers will also find a number of authentic Indian restaurants that serve great food at affordable prices.
