Wollongong, with a population of more than 250,000 people is the third most populous city in New South Wales state of Australia. It lies in the Illawarra region and is between the Pacific Ocean (east) and the Illawarra Escarpment (west). This is why the city has many hills in the west, including the Church Hill, Smith’s Hill, Flagstaff Hill, and Cringila Hill. In fact, many establishments and institutions in the city stand on these hills, like the Wollongong Botanic Gardens and the city’s hospital.

The origin of the city’s name varies in meaning, such as “sound of the sea” and “hard ground near water”.  All these meanings, however, generally refer to the fact that the city is located near a vast body of ocean.

Most destinations in Wollongong are for nature tourists. They are divided into beaches and terrains. In fact, there are 17 beaches scattered throughout the city. These beaches are strategically located near restaurants and hotels, such as the Towradgi Beach, Bulli Beach (city’s south) and the North Beach (city’s center). The Botanical Garden is perfect for picnic and bicycle activities, while seeing the exceptional plant species endemic in the city. It is located beside the Wollongong University, considered as one of the top universities in Australia.
Sky-diving and sightseeing can be done in places such as the Bulli Pass Lookout and the Mount Keira Lookout. Sky-diving is usually affordable for a cheap price to travelers. Souvenir shops and eating places can be found in both areas. The Minnamurra Rainforest, on the other hand, is a sub-tropical forest where tourists are invited to see wildlife in action, such as wombats, deers, and lyre birds.

Also in the city is the BHP Australian Historical Flying Museum. Not just any kind of museum, this museum showcases the aircrafts and the exhibition facility of Australia.
