Newcastle is the second largest city of New South Wales states in Australia. It has a population of less than 300,000 people, and an area of 101 square miles. It is famous for its coal resources (among others such as copper and steel) and is thus known as the largest coal exporter in the world.

Originally occupied by the Awabakal and Worimir aborigines, it was accidentally discovered in 1797 by John Shortland. Its coal deposits were then quickly known, and convicts used to be the first coal miners in the Hunter Valley.

Festivals are also celebrated throughout the year. This includes the Mattara Festival, where parades and musical concerts are held, in October. Another is the Surfest, a surfing festival famous in Australia.
